In 2017, two parents of Austin High Students, Baron and Ashley Unbenhagen, joined forces with many of the folks in the Austin fitness scene to give a facelift to the crown jewel of Austin’s fitness scene – “the track.”
In the coming weeks, everyone came together to support something everyone in the Austin fitness scene could get behind – building a world class facility that everyone can use, right there at Austin High. A facility we can be proud of to showcase high level competitions, a safe place to do workouts on in the early mornings and late evenings, and a spot where we can all go to and look at the Austin skyline before or after we run.
“The track” is a place where weekend warriors, morning walkers, Olympians, and everyone in between has done a workout or two. It’s a place where many convene in the mornings to do a “lap or two” before heading out on the trail. It’s a place where the youth of Austin can dream big that they too, can become the next Leo Manzano or Trey Hardee.
In the words of Ryan Jech, “here’s to the next high school kid, whose dream is as high as the sky to run as swiftly as the winds of Texas. I support Back the Track so some kid in high school can run as fast he or she can for as long as they can.”
Together, along with our friends at the Austin Ed Fund, Austin Community Foundation, A.I.S.D., Austin High, and the Austin fitness community at large, we have formed a public-private partnership where we have a once in a lifetime chance to steer and drive the direction of the track the way we want it to be, with the features we want to have, while maintaining the history and ambiance that currently occupy the space.
Join us, get involved, donate today, and be apart of giving a much deserved facelift to the Austin High track so today’s generation can continue to inspire the next.
